It looks like an everyday Jeep Grand Cherokee, just like the ones from Atlantic Auto Group in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. But take a closer gander at that decal: 100% Electric. The Amp Electric Grand Cherokee has been introduced at 2012's Detroit Auto Show.
Made in conjunction with Amp, based in Cincinnati OH, only one model has been built so far. But reviews are coming in all thumbs-up. The ride is stable, range is good: 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds, with a range of 80 to 100 miles. A pair of Remy AC motors power this Cherokee, generating 153 kilowatts, along with a 37.6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion phosphate battery pack.
This version of the Cherokee will sell for $57,400 in two-wheel drive, not counting the maximum $7,500 federal income tax credit for green cars. Four-wheel-drive version will go for $59,400, prior to credit. As of now, only online reservations are being taken. Jeeps hopes to begin fleet sales during late summer or early fall.
Jim Taylor, Amp's chief executive, said, "well-appointed S.U.V.'s capable of avoiding the gas-guzzler tag would appeal to consumers in high-wealth corridors." Amp and Jeep are also looking to reduce the cost of this vehicle, to appeal to a wider audience.1
