Chrysler to Add a New Body Shop at Sterling Heights Manufacturing Facility

It's hard to believe the Sterling Heights manufacturing was on rocky ground just two short years ago. In 2009, Chrysler didn't even include the plant in their reorganization plans. Now, it's where they build the 200 and Avenger. It's also the facility in which Chrysler has just promised to invest $165 million to build a new, state-of-the art body shop. This is in addition to the $850-million paint shop Chrysler promised to add back in December 2010.
"Last year, Chrysler made the decision to continue operating the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant indefinitely," says General Holiefeild, VP, UAW. "Today, the plant is thriving with 900 new employees and additional investment that recognizes the commitment and dedication of this highly-skilled workforce toward building a successful Chrysler Group."1
The UAW, for readers not familiar with the acronym, stands for International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agriculture Implement Workers of America. It's one of the most prominent and diverse unions representing workers in North America.
Coinciding with Chrysler's announcement of the new body shop, 26,000 UAW represented Chrysler workers began voting on a new four-year labor contract. In an early proposal, Chrysler promised to invest $4.5 billion and create over two-thousand jobs.
Let's see all tallied up, that's a total of 2,000-plus new jobs, a new body shop, a new paint shop, over five-billion dollars in investments. Looks like Chrysler is determined to prove American's right...that yes, the Underdog can...and will win in the end.
